U.S. stock indexes drop amid global tensions

NEW YORK — Escalating protests in Egypt jarred world financial markets Friday and U.S. stocks fell.

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 166 points to close at 11,823.70, its worst one-day drop since Nov. 16 and resulting in a one week loss of 0.4 percent after eight straight weeks of gains.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index declined 23.20 points Friday to 1,276.34, and finished down 0.5 percent for the week. The Nasdaq composite decreased 68.39 yesterday to 2,686.89, losing 0.1 percent for the week.
