With more people looking for work, jobless rates in Michigan counties, including Monroe, Lenawee, and Hillsdale, rose last month from the previous month, figures released Thursday show.

The rates in May were 9.6 percent in Monroe County, up from 9.5 percent in April; 10.6 percent in Hillsdale County, up from 10.4 percent; and 11.1 percent in Lenawee County, up from 10.8 percent.

The statewide unemployment rate, announced last week, rose to 10.3 percent from 10.2 percent the month before. The rate increased because more people were out looking for work who did not have a job.
