Ohio's jobless rate rises to 8.8 percent

Ohio’s unemployment climbed to 8.8 percent in June, up from 8.6 percent the month before, the state said Friday.

The number of unemployed increased by 9,000 to 517,000 last month even as the number of employed rose by 10,600 to 5.1 million, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

A year ago, the jobless rate was 10.1 percent and there were 78,000 more unemployed in Ohio.

The U.S. unemployment rate for June, released two weeks ago, was 9.2 percent, up from 9.1 percent in May.

The jobless rates in Ohio counties will be released Tuesday.
