June jobless rate climbs in southeast Michigan

More people joined the ranks of the unemployed who are seeking work, causing the June jobless rate in Michigan’s Monroe, Hillsdale, and Lenawee counties to rise from the month earlier.

The June rates, released this week, were 10.4 percent in Monroe, up from 9.6 percent in May; 11.4 percent in Hillsdale, up from 10.6 percent, and 11.6 percent in Lenawee, up from 11.1 percent.

Michigan’s statewide unemployment rate, released a week ago, increased to 10.5 percent in June from 10.3 percent a month earlier. Although an increase, the June rate still was significantly lower than June, 2010’s rate of 12.6 percent.
