Federal aid available to ex-Hostess workers

More than 860 Ohioans who lost their jobs when Hostess Brands Inc. closed last year are eligible to apply for Trade Adjustment Assistance through the U.S. Department of Labor.

The ruling, which was announced earlier this week, affects more than 260 people from northwest Ohio. The majority of those worked at the Hostess bakery in Northwood.

The Labor Department said it found imports of baked goods “contributed importantly” to Hostess’ sales declines and job losses. The Trade Adjustment Assistance program has a variety of benefits including training for jobs in a new career, job search allowances, and can help replace lost wages.

The Department of Labor said those who are eligible will be contacted. In all, more than 18,000 former Hostess workers nationwide are eligible to apply.
