BX Solutions Inc., the start-up logistics company that moved into the former BAX Global Inc. hub at Toledo Express Airport in late 2011 after BAX pulled out, expects to lay off a significant part of its work force after a customer withdrew from a long-term contract, BX’s president said Friday.
Chris Marshall said the exact number of layoffs remained to be determined, but the reduction was likely to occur within two weeks.
BX is attempting to negotiate with the unidentified customer, he said, but has not taken off the table the possibility of legal action for breach of contract if negotiation is unsuccessful.
“We are in the middle of a three-year contract with the customer, who has chosen to make changes that are inconsistent with our contract expectations,” Mr. Marshall said in a prepared statement.
“We have found out about this in a very quick period of time” and are assessing the consequences of the customer’s action, he added in an interview.
BX employs about 250 people on two shifts, handling packages and freight that arrive and depart by truck.
Mr. Marshall said he had met with employees Friday morning to explain the situation. He did not have a breakdown on how many of the 250 employees were full time.
In January, the company announced establishment of a “time-definite” trucking service connecting 31 Midwestern and Southeastern markets through hubs in Toledo, Chicago, and Atlanta.
Mr. Marshall said that service now covers 55 cities, and plans are in the works to add 10 more.
The company continues to pursue other avenues for building its business, including possible entries into air and rail intermodal transport, and expects to make announcements in that regard in the near future, Mr. Marshall said.
