2 get jail terms for roles in Mich. car-chase fatality
8/16/2007MONROE A former Bedford School board member and a teenage driver will serve time in jail for their roles in the death of a Toledo teen last summer.
Randy Krell, 52, was sentenced this afternoon by Chief Circuit Judge Michael W. LaBeau s to nine months in jail and three years on probation after being found guilty in the death of Charlie Fackelman, 17, and the injuring of Stevie Beale, then 17.
Krell, had pleaded not guilty to vehicular manslaughter and felonious driving, but a jury in late June found him guilty of negligent homicide.
He was convicted of chasing a car filled with teenagers through Bedford Township the night of June 15, 2006, after one of them threw a bottle of water at his car. The driver, Austin Oberle, then 17, went through an intersection and hit a tree, killing young Fackelman and crippling Miss Beale.
Oberle, 18, had earlier pleaded guilty to two felonies felonious driving and negligent homicide and this afternoon he was sentenced to six months in jail, 89 days of community service, and three years on probation.
The sentences were imposed after tearful statements from Miss Beale and the mother of young Fackelman.
