Police complete probe of brawl at UT dance

1/24/2001

University of Toledo police have wrapped up their investigation of a Student Union brawl early Sunday that sent an officer to the hospital and resulted in nine arrests.

The "Ice Breaker Dance" was sponsored by Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. UT police Chief John Dauer said authorities have not determined the cause of the fight.

The matter now is in the hands of the university's conduct officer, who will determine if any of the arrested students violated the UT code of conduct. "The conduct review could take months, and its findings are not public," Tobin Klinger, UT media relations coordinator, said.

The brawl broke out at a dance attended by 700 to 1,000 people. Four off-duty Toledo police officers provided security, but more than 50 officers from the university, Toledo, and Ottawa Hills police responded to their call for assistance. UT police Officer Jeff Newton, who was hurt when he tackled a man who fled officers after throwing a chair, was released from Medical College of Ohio Hospitals.
