Expulsion recommended for having knife in school

A Springfield High School sophomore found with a Swiss Army knife at school is serving a 10-day suspension and has been recommended for expulsion.

The 17-year-old student, who told authorities she brought the knife to the school at 1470 South McCord Rd. regularly, was suspended last week after she allegedly threatened another student May 21.

The knife was not with her at the time, but it was found in her purse the next day when she was questioned about the incident, said Dr. Cynthia Beekley, superintendent of Springfield Local Schools.

Dr. Beekley said the action is the district's standard procedure any time a knife or other weapon is found at school. An investigation into the matter is ongoing, she said.
