AW board member to retire Dec. 31

10/11/2001

After serving on the Anthony Wayne board of education for 81/2 years, Carl Graves has decided to retire from the board, effective Dec. 31.

Mr. Graves was a candidate for re-election during the Nov. 6 general election, but he has withdrawn his name.

This means that there will be an uncontested race for two seats on the board.

Incumbent Don Atkinson and newcomer Doug Zimmerman are seeking the two school board seats.

Mr. Graves, who has been a resident of the Anthony Wayne community more than 50 years, said that he endorses and supports both candidates, and he plans to continue to offer his support to the school district.

“The success of this district is due to our excellent staff and students and to the overwhelming support the schools receive from the community,” he said.

Superintendent Randy Hardy described Mr. Graves as an asset to the board.

“His dedication to educational excellence and his long history with Anthony Wayne Schools have benefited the district in many ways,” Mr. Hardy said.

Mr. Atkinson and Mr. Zimmerman are scheduled to speak tonight at the Whitehouse Parents Club meeting at Whitehouse Primary School, 6510 Texas St., after a teacher panel discussion that is scheduled to begin at 7.

Anthony Wayne school district, founded in 1950, has an enrollment of about 3,500 students.
