Charter school council files for nonprofit status

7/5/2002

Some members of the University of Toledo Charter School Council have filed for designation as a nonprofit organization, council spokeswoman Allison Perz said.

The UT board of trustees, acting on a recommendation from President Daniel Johnson, voted last month to begin disassociating the charter school council and finding a replacement entity to oversee the schools.

Pending legislation would allow non-profit agencies to grant charters in Ohio — the reason for the council's filing this week, Ms. Perz said. Area public schools superintendents also have said they are interested in overseeing the charters of the council's seven schools.
