Ada education union files unfair practice charge

ADA, Ohio - During the midst of contract negotiations, the Ada Education Association has filed an unfair labor practice charge against the Ada Board of Education and its superintendent.

The charge was filed with the State Employment Relations Board in Columbus, union officials said. It alleges that on or after Sept. 12, the Board of Education restricted the access of union representatives to union members.

It also states that the school board unilaterally implemented a meeting before school hours for elementary teachers without first trying to negotiate details for that additional meeting. Teachers at the elementary school have been active on the union bargaining committee, union leaders added.

The two sides have been trying to hash out a new contract, as the old contract expired June 30. Terms of the former contract will remain in effect until a new one can be reached.

The parties have scheduled a mediation session for Thursday with federal mediator Rick Terpinski.
