North Baltimore student takes seat on council

10/18/2002

NORTH BALTIMORE - High School Junior Elessa Castillo took her seat on North Baltimore Village Council this week.

She became the first high school student to be selected for the job. Miss Castillo will be able to vote on council matters, but her vote will not be binding.

The idea of having a student representative on council was proposed last year and adopted by village council in February, although a student appointment was not made until this fall. Former Councilman David McDonald proposed the idea as a way to expose high school students to local government and to bring different ideas and a younger perspective to community issues.
