Defiance College grad lands 2nd national honor

3/20/2003

DEFIANCE — A 2001 Defiance College graduate has received her second national honor in just a year.

Maggie Maloy recently was awarded the courageous student-athlete award from the National Consortium for Academics and Sports.

The national consortium recognizes outstanding athletes each year. In honoring Miss Maloy, the NCAS said, “Maloy has literally twice beaten death with an enduring spirit and will to survive.”

At age 15, Miss Maloy was abducted, raped, and shot five times during an early morning cross-country practice. While attending Defiance College as a student-athlete, she was in a car accident that broke her pelvis in three places.

In 2002, Miss Maloy was recognized with the first-ever inspiration award by the National Collegiate Athletic Conference.
