Addison school district lays off 7 teachers

ADDISON, Mich. — Seven teachers have been laid off at Addison Community Schools.

Superintendent Richard Naughton cited budget concerns that led the school board to lay off the teachers: three from the high school, one from the middle school, and three elementary school teachers.

Late last year, employees in the district agreed to work free for four days of the next school year. That saved eight people — including administrators, bus drivers, and teachers — from being laid off just before Christmas.

That move was orchestrated by the district's two unions and approved by the Board of Education to help out with a $189,000 deficit. The free work applied to all 170 employees, even the superintendent.
