Parents express interest in single-sex schools

The same day Toledo Public Schools formally announced its new single-sex schools — Ella P. Stewart Girls Academy and Lincoln Academy for Boys — parents began calling the schools and the administration requesting information, district officials said yesterday.

Marcia Helman, the school improvement leader for the Libbey area where Stewart is located, said the elementary school received several telephone calls from parents asking about how to enroll their daughters.

Superintendent Eugene Sanders and other administrators at the Thurgood Marshall Building, the district's administrative headquarters, received about 15 telephone calls yesterday, a district spokesman said.

Toledo Public Schools plans to open the two single-sex academies in August. They will be two of five single-sex public schools in the state and the only all-girls public school. Next week, the district will begin accepting applications. They can be obtained at the Thurgood Marshall Building.
