Allen East schools seek funds for new building

HARROD, Ohio — Residents in the Allen East local school district will get a chance on the November ballot to decide whether to fund a new school building.

The Board of Education voted Monday to put 7.12 mills on the ballot. If approved, the funds would give the Allen County district its share of the costs of a new school as well as additional money to build athletic fields and a maintenance garage.

The initiative was the result of funds promised by the Ohio Schools Facilities Commission that would pay 79 percent of a new facility for prekindergarten through 12th grade. The total cost of the project is expected to be $32,086,780, district Treasurer Rhonda Zimmerly said.

For its share, the district is asking residents to approve about $6.3 million for the building and an additional $2.2 million as a locally funded initiative, which includes the athletic fields. An additional $500,000 is also part of the millage for maintenance as required by the state.

The new building would bring all students together on one site, Ms. Zimmerly said.
