Welch, Sykes to lead Toledo school board

1/6/2004

David Welch became the new president of the Toledo Board of Education, and Larry Sykes was sworn in as vice president at last night's annual organizational meeting.

Deborah Barnett also joined the board, taking the oath of office for her four-year term. She won election in November to replace Terry Glazer, who did not seek a third term.

Mr. Welch, 42, is two years into his second term on the board. He is the manager for solid waste for the city of Toledo. He replaces Peter Silverman as board president; he served three years in that office.

The board last night also renewed the contract of Treasurer Jim Fortlage. He will be paid $119,100, the same salary he received last year.
