Universities, colleges set commencements

The University of Toledo will hold spring commencement ceremonies at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday in John F. Savage Hall.

Judith Heumann, adviser for disabilities and development in the Human Development Network at the World Bank, will speak at the first ceremony for the colleges of arts and sciences, engineering, health and human services, and university libraries.

The second ceremony will be highlighted by remarks from Nancy Zimpher, president of the University of Cincinnati. The ceremony will be for graduates in the colleges of business administration, pharmacy, and education, and university college.

UT's law school will have its graduation ceremony Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at SeaGate Centre downtown. The guest speaker will be media mogul Ted Turner, who launched the cable channel CNN and the Goodwill Games.

Bowling Green State University will have four ceremonies in Anderson Arena. The first will be for the graduate college at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The guest speaker will be Joseph Jacoby, a BGSU sociology professor.

The undergraduate ceremonies will take place Saturday, beginning with the college of arts and sciences at 9:30 a.m. Thomas Klein, a retiring English professor and director of BGSU's Chapman Community at Kohl Hall, will speak.

Three graduating students - Tracy LaHote, Tiffany Ryan, and Jacqueline Gallo - will address the colleges of business administration, health and human services, and technology at 1 p.m. At 4:30 p.m., the colleges of education and human development and musical arts will hear Magdalena Fribley, a BGSU alumna who manages fitness, aquatics, and spa facilities at the New Albany Country Club in Ohio.

Commencement at BGSU's Firelands campus in Huron, Ohio will be Friday at 7 p.m. in the Cedar Point Center. BGSU alumnus George Mylander, a philanthropist and former Sandusky mayor, will speak.

Below is a list of other spring commencement ceremonies at area colleges and universities:

  • Davis College, May 21 at 7 p.m. in the Stranahan Theater at the Masonic Complex, 4645 Heatherdowns Blvd. Brian Beckett, president of Inner Performance of Dayton, will speak.

  • Defiance College, Sunday at noon on the Colonnade Green. Wayne Meisel, president of the Bonner Foundation, will speak.

  • Heidelberg College in Tiffin, May 16 at 2:30 p.m. in Seiberling Gymnasium. Ohio. Lt. Gov. Jennette Bradley will speak.

  • Hillsdale College, Saturday at 2 p.m. on the East Lawn or in the college's Health Education and Sports Complex in case of rain. Edwin Feulner, president of the Heritage Foundation, will speak.

  • Lourdes College, May 22 at 1 p.m. in the Stranahan Theater. U.S. District Court Judge David Katz will speak.

  • Medical College of Ohio, June 4 at 2 p.m. at the Stranahan Theater. The guest speaker will be U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye (D, Hawaii).

  • Mercy College of Northwest Ohio, Friday in Rosary Cathedral, 2535 Collingwood Blvd. Helen Mae Dickman, past director of the former Mercy School of Nursing, will speak.

  • Northwest State Community College in Archbold, May 15 at 2 p.m. on the college's front lawn. Betty K. Young, the college's president, will speak.

  • Ohio Northern University in Ada, May 23 at 1:30 p.m. in the Sports Center. The guest speaker will be Steven Squyres, primary scientific investigator for the Mars rovers for NASA. Law school commencement will be May 16 at 1:30 p.m. at the Sports Center. Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas Moyer will speak.

  • Owens Community College, May 13 at 7 p.m. in the Student Health and Activities Center on the Perrysburg Township campus. Gary R. Heminger, president of Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC, will speak.

  • Terra Community College in Fremont, June 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Activities Center. State Sen. Randy Gardner (R., Bowling Green) will speak.
