Lima union local to end scholarship program

LIMA, Ohio - Dwindling resources and declining membership in United Auto Workers Local 1219 mean the union will no longer sponsor scholarships at the Ohio State University's Lima campus and adjacent James A. Rhodes State College.

The union, which represents workers at the nearby Ford Motor Co. engine plant, has financed $458,000 in scholarships for 406 students at the campus since 1967.

Yesterday, Thomas Carter, Local 1219's financial secretary, said this would be the last year the union could afford to award the scholarships.
