UT to give Sunday commencement a try next year

6/11/2004

The University of Toledo will move its spring commencement ceremony next year to a Sunday instead of the traditional Saturday in an attempt to be more sensitive to some religious groups, officials said.

The change to May 8 will be a trial to see how a Sunday graduation goes.

Discussions at UT's diversity commission showed that some students and community members suggested trying a Sunday commencement from time to time for the benefit of groups that celebrate a Saturday Sabbath, said William Bischoff, UT vice provost of academic programs and policies.

He said a careful assessment will be conducted of next year's commencement.

Officials said some other Ohio schools traditionally hold their graduation ceremonies on a Sunday, including Ohio State University, Case Western Reserve University, and the University of Findlay.
