7/7/2004Michael Chang Salwiesz has been named the Raoul Wallenberg Scholar of 2004-2005 at The University of Toledo, one of eleven honored with the award since 1990. He also receives a $2,500 grant -in-aid.
His record of volunteer community service and choice of a career in social work were cited as exemplary of the service of Raoul Wallenberg, who fought injustice during the Holocaust.

Rebecca Barrow of Ottawa Hills, a recent graduate of Central Catholic High School, has received the Otterbein Scholar and Endowed Scholarship as well as talent scholarships from the Otterbein music and theatre and dance departments. The awards total over $13,000 per year for four years.
A member of the National Honor Society, Glee Club, and dance team, Rebecca plans to study music and dance in the Otterbein honors program.

Rebecca Righi and Tyger Glauser have received the 2004 Maumee Education Association's Future Educator Scholarships, which are given to Maumee High School graduating seniors planning on a teaching career.
Rebecca will receive $3,000 and Tyger, $1,500. Both students were active in various school organizations. They both plan to attend Bowling Green State University.

Shannon McNamara of Toledo and Olivia Twu of Perrysburg have been awarded full tuition Medalist Scholarships from Ohio State University. The awards are valued at approximately $7,500 per year, renewable for four years.
The graduating high school seniors competed for the scholarships by submitting an essay in the annual University Scholar Maximus Competition held in February.
Laura Sanders of Whitehouse and Lauren Charpie of Sylvania received Tradition Scholarships from OSU in the same competition. The awards are approximately $3,750 per year, renewable for four years.

Lauren Fairchild of Toledo, a recent graduate of Whitmer High School, has received a Tuition Equalization Scholarship of $9,974 from Bluffton College. She was active in the National Honor Society, soccer, track, and band and plans to play soccer at Bluffton.

The following graduates of Northwood High School have received scholarships of $500 and over and have accepted the following scholarships from the schools they plan to attend.
Mike Adams received an Opportunity Grant of $2,580 per year and an Incentive Scholarship of $1,750 per year from Bluffton College. He also received a Nina Kozina Athletic Boosters Scholarship of $500 and a Ron St. Johns Scholarship of $500.
Kelly Bear has received a $1,000 per year Owens Community College Trustees Scholarship.
Gabrielle Childress was awarded a full tuition Tower Excellence Scholarship of $7,191 from the University of Toledo, a Penta Career Center Ohio Academic Scholarship of $2,205 per year, and a Hirzel Canning Company scholarship of $1,000.
Brittany Childers received a Bassitt Family Scholarship of $1,000. She plans to study nursing at Mercy College of Northwest Ohio.
Megan Cummings was awarded a $2,000 per year Phoenix Scholarship from Wilson College, Pa., where she will be a medical veterinarian technician major.
Amanda Edwards received a $600 per year Buckeye Community Scholarship from Ohio State University and a $500 Northwood Local Education Association Scholarship.
Ruth Fahrbach was awarded an East Toledo/Oregon Kiwanis Scholarship of $1,500; she will study nursing at the University of Toledo.
Jamie Flick received the Andersons' Principal's Choice Award of $500, a Northwood Local Education Association Scholarship of $500, and a Northwood High School Key Club Scholarship of $500. She will attend Bowling Green State University.
Amy Jardy has been awarded a $4,750 per year Ohio State University Trustees Scholarship, a National Bank of Oak Harbor scholarship of $500, and a Coca Cola Scholarship of $600. She plans to study nursing.
Stacy Kozina has received a $15,370 per year academic scholarship from Case Western University, where she will study business management.
Benjamin Niese was awarded a $3,750 per year Oklahoma State University non-resident scholarship; he will study architectural engineering.
Natalie Phillips has accepted an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy, where she will study astronautical engineering. She also received a Howard and Clara Trumbull Scholarship of $1,000 from National Family Opinion and a Target Corporation Scholarship of $1,000.
Lindsay Reckley has received a Dean's Award of $5,700 per year from Ohio Northern University, where she will study forensic science.
Amelia Renfro has accepted an academic scholarship from Ohio Northern University of $6,700 per year and received a $1,500 scholarship from Daimler Chrysler.
Kim Simok received a $500 scholarship from the Toledo Academy of Beauty.
Meryl Smith has been awarded the Tommy Williams Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 per year and an Ohio University Valedictorian Scholarship of $1,000 per year. She also has received a Nina Kozina Athletic Boosters Scholarship of $500. She plans to study broadcast journalism at the Scripps School of Journalism at OU.
Melissa Stoner has received an Ohio Northern University Trustee Merit Scholarship of $17,000 per year, plus a Big 33 Waste Management Scholarship of $1,000. She plans to major in pharmaceutical sciences.
Alyson Turner has been awarded an Institutional Award of $2,300 per year and an Academic Scholarship of $10,000 per year from the University of Findlay. She has also received the Roger Fisher Science Scholarship of $1,000. She plans to become a physician's assistant.

The following area students in the college of technology at Bowling Green State University have received awards valued at $500 or more.
Kent Truckor of Swanton, a junior, received the Kuhlman Corporation Scholarship of $500.
Graduate student Diane Patino of Holland was awarded the $1,000 G.R. Horton Graduate Scholarship.
Freshman Melissa Quinn of Whitehouse, sophomore Jason Thompson of Bowling Green, and junior Ashley Digby of Grand Rapids each received a $1,000 Ardanall B. Mason Memorial Scholarship for academic excellence. Melissa also received the $500 Collaborative Scholarship, and Ashley received a $500 Alumni Book Scholarship.
Ryan Konopinski of Portage, a junior, received an Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Association Scholarship valued at $1,300, plus an Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation Society Scholarship of $500.

Music Talent Award scholarships from Bowling Green State University's college of musical arts were made to the following incoming freshmen.
Kyle VanArsdalen of Bryan High School and Sarah Connelly of Perrysburg High School, both violinists, each received $5,000. Corey Baum of Bowling Green High Schoo, a bassist, received $2,000. Adam Landry of Sylvania Northview High School, a trombonist, and Kendra Connelly of Whitmer High School, a violinist, each received $1,000.

Clayton Chiarclott of Rossford, an English major at Bowling Green State University and employee at the Wendy's restaurant on campus, has received a $1,000 Wendy's 2004 scholarship. An honors student, he has also earned the BGSU Professor's scholarship.

Christopher Fairchild of Toledo has received an Excellence Scholarship of $1,000 from the Buckeye Boys State Foundation.

Five high school graduates were awarded $800 college scholarships by St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Millbury: Chrisopher Ankney of Walbridge, Lake High School; Trevor Delphous of Millbury, Lake; Crystal Grimes and Katie Heilman of Northwood, Lake, and Alex Rathke of Curtice, Genoa High School.
