New official chosen for Owens post

8/11/2004

Owens Community College has named a Michigan man its new vice president of human resources.

When Eugene Lapko takes over the job Sept. 7, he will become the second high-ranking official at the college to follow President Christa Adams from St. Clair County Community College in Port Huron.

His hiring was approved yesterday by the Owens board of trustees. He will be paid an annual salary of $97,000.

Mr. Lapko, 56, has been executive director of human resources for St. Clair Community College since 1998, and he worked there for a while with Ms. Adams, who was president at that college before taking the helm at Owens in 2001. He also follows Gary Dettling, who was hired at Owens from the Michigan community college three years ago to be vice president of college advancement.

Mr. Lapko will replace Dan Hauenstein, who resigned effective June 30 and who had been leading contract negotiations with the Owens faculty that are ongoing.
