State grants Fostoria money to raze schools

8/12/2004

FOSTORIA - The Ohio Department of Development has approved a grant of up to $500,000 to help Fostoria raze several old school buildings.

The grant will cover half the cost of removing asbestos and razing the old Emerson Junior High and Lowell Elementary schools, the former school administration building, and the district's former service garage. The buildings are on a seven-acre parcel bounded by Perry, West High, and Elm streets that is to be cleared for construction of a 58,000-square-foot Kroger supermarket.

The city estimates asbestos removal will cost $180,000, and demolition will cost $725,000. Bids will be opened Aug. 26.
