Former teacher to lose license

8/17/2004

The State Board of Education plans to revoke the license of a former Waite High School teacher who was fired in 2001 for having sex with a student and making advances on another.

Timothy Wendling, an industrial technology teacher at the East Toledo High School, was accused of unprofessional conduct in two incidents. His contract with Toledo Public Schools was terminated in May, 2001, according to district records.

The board published its intent to revoke Mr. Wendling s four-year special provisional teaching certificate on Aug. 8. A spokesman for Ohio Department of Education could not be reached for comment.

Mr. Wendling was accused of having sexual intercourse with a 16-year-old girl in his classroom office in January, 1999. He told the student not to say anything about the incident, gave her an A for the semester, and told her she didn t have to take the final exam, according to a 2001 Toledo Public Schools report. Charges were not filed in the case.

In the second incident, a student reported that on March 5, 2001, Mr. Wendling had tried to hug and kiss her, the report said.

In order for the Ohio Department of Education to revoke a teaching license, the state Board of Education must vote after an investigation by the department s office of professional conduct.

Mr. Wendling had taught in Toledo city schools since 1983. During that time he was at Scott High School, Old West End Junior High School, and Byrnedale Junior High School before joining Waite in 1995.
