Eight junior Girl Scouts in the seventh grade at St. Joseph Catholic School in Maumee received Bronze Awards on Sept. 9. The award, considered the highest honor for junior Girl Scouts, is given to Scouts who successfully complete a 15-hour volunteer service project. The St. Joseph recipients are all members of Troop 173, which constructed bird houses and other decorations for the gardens at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. The award winners are Ellen Gstalder, Caroline Hoover, Grace McIlwain, and Chloe McNear of Maumee; Anne Glaza and Katie Martin of Waterville; Lexi Oberhouse of Perrysburg; and Nicole Kuchcinski of Bowling Green.

Tim Hatcher of Maumee, a member of Boy Scout Troop 201 of Toledo, was recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout after earning 35 merit badges and completing an Eagle project. His project involved the planning and construction of 25 first aid kits as well as a storage shed for Habitat for Humanity.

Tim is a senior at Maumee High School and the son of Larry and Teryl Hatcher.

Mary Smith of Toledo, an elementary school teacher in the Toledo Public Schools, will visit Japan in October as part of the Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program. The program is administered by the Japan-United States Educational Commission to promote intercultural understanding.

Mrs. Smith and a group of 200 educators will travel to Tokyo for an orientation on Japanese culture and to meet with Japanese officials and educators. The group will then visit a teacher's college and primary and secondary schools in different parts of the country. The trip will include a homestay with a Japanese family and visits to cultural centers and local industry.

In Tokyo, Mrs. Smith plans to visit her son Travis, who began teaching English there after graduating from college in 2003.
