Ohio regents to eye funding, tuition cap plan

COLUMBUS - The Ohio Board of Regents is expected at an Oct. 21 meeting to further discuss a proposal for tying state support of education with tuition caps in its next budget request.

The plan, which received informal support yesterday from members of the state's higher education funding commission, is viewed as a way of encouraging investment in higher education by the state.

Officials have been working on a formula that could be used to reflect the expenditure pressures on campus. In turn, that indicator would be used to help decide on a possible tuition cap across Ohio, pending the state's approval of additional funding for education.

Jamie Abel, a spokesman for the board of regents, said yesterday that officials still are working out details of the plan, including what the cap could be and the relationship between the regents' funding formula and financial support from the state.
