Laura Bowerman, has been appointed executive director of the Girl Scouts of Maumee Valley Council by its board of trustees. She has been acting executive director since July 2003 and has also served as assistant executive director and human resources director.

Ms. Bowerman is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Executive Women's Golf Association. She has 15 years of management experience with non-profit organizations.

Noreen Cromly of Oregon and Kathy Wilkens of Perrysburg, science teachers at Central Catholic High School, were among those selected by the Ohio Academy of Science to receive the Governor's Award for excellence in teaching. They will receive special certificates from the Ohio Department of Education.

Central Catholic received the Governor's Award for Excellence in Youth Science Opportunities and is the only high school in the Toledo area to receive the award 10 years in a row.

To qualify for the award, schools must conduct a local science fair with 20 or more students, have at least one of those students participate in the Academy's district science day, and involve students in science events outside the classroom.
