James Howe is a 19-year Springfield veteran teaching algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, honors geometry and advanced placement calculus AB/BC. He earned his master's degree in 1994 from the University of Toledo.

Mr. Howe has been selected multiple times by valedictorians and salutatorians as the teacher who "Made a Difference" in their lives, and was honored at a breakfast sponsored by the Lucas County Educational Service Center.

His calculus AB and BC class had a 100 percent passing rate on the advanced placement exam in 2001.

Mr. Howe is recipient of the academic achievement award - the highest honor bestowed at Springfield High School as nominated by his peers - and is active as a coach and mentor for the wrestling and track teams.

"Jim Howe is an outstanding teacher: creative, dynamic and engaging," said superintendent Cynthia Beekley. "His expertise in mathematics is legendary, and his selection last year as a teacher who "made a difference" for his students attests to his excellent teaching abilities and skills."
