TPS board to consider levy vote for May ballot

2/12/2005

The Toledo Board of Education Tuesday morning will consider whether to ask voters for approval of a permanent improvement levy on the May ballot.

The 2.5-mill levy, which generates about $5 million a year, dates to 1985 and has been renewed every five years since then.

School board members said they have not yet discussed if they would ask voters for a renewal or a replacement. The board of education will meet at 7:30 a.m. in the district's administration building, 420 East Manhattan Blvd.

The property tax currently costs $27 a year for the owner of a home valued at $75,000. If it were passed as a replacement, which allows for taxation at the current assessment of property values, it would cost $54 a year, according to James Fortlage, district treasurer.

The permanent improvement levy pays for building maintenance. The deadline to place it on the May ballot is Thursday.
