Pike-Delta-York: School superintendent interviews to be slated

DELTA - Interviews of candidates for the superintendent's post in the Pike-Delta-York school district will be held in the coming weeks.

Tomorrow is the posted deadline for applications, said John Kaylor, deputy superintendent of the Northwest Ohio Educational Service Center. The center is assisting PDY school officials in the superintendent search process. Several applications have been received so far, Mr. Kaylor said.

Initial screening of the applicants is to begin April 25. Mr. Kaylor and John Wilhelm, superintendent of the educational service center, will conduct the screening. By mid-May, recommendations likely will be made to the PDY school board about the potential top candidates, perhaps six names from the pool of applicants, Mr. Kaylor said. It will be suggested that the PDY board interview those

candidates, but Mr. Kaylor noted that the PDY board will receive all application materials and the board can accept or change the recommendations.

Based on a tentative schedule, the first round of interviews could be conducted May 16-18, Mr. Kaylor said, with final interviews the week of May 30. A committee made up of representatives from local groups, such as the teachers' union, will do the first interviews, Mr. Kaylor said. The board will observe those interviews, he said.

The committee will provide the school board with information on the strengths and weaknesses of the candidates, and the board will decide who returns for final interviews, he said, adding that ultimately, the board will decide who gets hired as superintendent.

A new superintendent could be named during the PDY's June board meeting, he said.

PDY Superintendent Russ Griggs is leaving the district when his one-year contract expires July 31.

Mr. Griggs, who retired as superintendent of Evergreen Local schools before becoming superintendent here, initially had a two-year contract with the PDY district. When he agreed in December, 2003, to stay for another year, he indicated he would leave at the end of the contract.
