Student of the Week: Andrew Melnyk

Andrew Melnyk, a senior from Northwood, plans to attend Ohio State University on a four-year Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps scholarship, majoring in fish and wildlife management. His favorite subject is honors chemistry and he carries a 3.6 grade point average.

Andrew is recipient of a certificate of outstanding achievement from the Ohio Senate, and a certificate of recognition for completing over 100 hours of community service. He received the president's volunteer service award and was nominated by Rep. Paul Gillmor(R., Old Fort, Ohio) to the U.S. Naval Academy.

He represented Northwood High School at the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Seminar; is a Buckeye Boy's State delegate and member of the National Honor Society, Key club, football and wrestling teams and musical cast.

He coaches for a summer youth football camp and teaches a conflict resolution program at Lark Elementary.

"Andrew has been a leader in our student body throughout most of his career at Northwood High School," said athletic director and English teacher Kem James. "In addition to doing excellent work in the classroom, he takes a leadership role in a variety of other activities."

Andrew is the son of Michael and Shelley Melnyk.
