Colleges slate commencements

Attorney Kenneth Starr and TV personality Ed McMahon will give commencement addresses at area colleges next month.

Mr. Starr, the independent counsel who investigated then- President Bill Clinton, will be at Hillsdale College in Michigan for commencement at 2 p.m. May 14.

The speech is planned for outside on the college's east lawn.

Mr. McMahon, former sidekick to Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show, will speak at Heidelberg College in Tiffin at 2:30 p.m. May 15 in Seiberling Gymnasium.

At the University of Toledo, C. Ray Mullins, a U.S. bankruptcy judge in Atlanta, will address College of Law graduates at 10 a.m. May 7 in the Student Union auditorium.

UT moved its other commencement ceremonies from Saturday to Sunday this year to be more sensitive to some religious groups.

On May 8, Richard Anderson, chairman of the board of The Andersons Inc., will speak at 10 a.m. for the graduation of the colleges of arts and sciences, engineering, and health and human services. Dr. Lloyd Jacobs, president of the Medical College of Ohio, will address the colleges of business administration, education, pharmacy, and university college at 2 p.m. that day. Both ceremonies will be in Savage Hall.

At Bowling Green State University, six speakers are scheduled for four ceremonies, all at Anderson Arena. The first is at 7 p.m. Friday for the graduate college. Dr. Adena Williams Loston, chief education officer at NASA headquarters in Washington, will speak.

Cynthia Bogner, associate director of defensive programs for the U.S. secretary of defense, is the speaker for the college of arts and sciences ceremonies set for at 9:30 a.m. May 7. At 1 p.m. that day, violinist Aaron Dworkin will address graduates in the college of musical arts and the college of education and human development. Three graduating seniors will address their peers in the remaining three colleges, business administration, health and human services, and technology, at 4:30 that afternoon.

Other spring commencement ceremonies include:

●Adrian College, tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center. Stephen Gray, managing publisher of The Christian Science Monitor, will speak.

●Bluffton University, May 8 at 2 p.m. in Salzman Stadium. Dr. Owen Gingrich, a professor of astronomy at Harvard University, will speak.

●Davis College, May 20 at 7 p.m. at the Stranahan Theater.

●Defiance College, May 8 at noon on the Colonnade Green in front of Pilgrim Library. U.S. Rep. Ralph Regula (R., Navarre) will speak.

●Lourdes College, May 21 at 1 p.m. at Stranahan Theatre. Richard Anderson, chairman of the board of The Andersons Inc., will speak.

●MCO, June 3 at 2 p.m. at the Stranahan Theater. Dr. Patrick Mulrow, MCO professor emeritus of medicine, will speak. John Robinson Block, publisher and editor-in-chief of The Blade and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and Allan Block, chairman of Block Communications Inc., will be presented with honorary degrees.

●Mercy College of Northwest Ohio, Friday at 7 p.m. at Rosary Cathedral. John Hayward, a Toledo lawyer, will speak.

●Northwest State Community College in Archbold, May 14 at 2 p.m. on the college lawn. State Auditor Betty Montgomery will speak.

●Ohio Northern University in Ada, May 22 at 2 p.m. at the Sports Center. Jeff Birnbaum, author and television commentator, will speak. The law school commencement will be at 2 p.m. May 15 in the same location. ONU law school graduate, U.S. Army Brig. Gen. David Carey, will speak.

●Owens Community College, May 12 at 7 p.m. in the Student Health and Activities Center on the Perrysburg campus. Ohio Supreme Court Justice Judith Ann Lanzinger will speak.

●Siena Heights University, Adrian, May 8 at 2 p.m. in the university field house. Three students will speak.

●Stautzenberger College, 7 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Franciscan Center at Lourdes College.

●Terra Community College, Fremont, June 10 at 7 p.m. in the Student Activities Center. Ohio House Minority Leader Chris Redfern (D., Catawba Island) will speak.

●Tiffin University, May 7 at 11 a.m. in the Gillmor Student Center for graduate students. Dr. Stephen Werling, an alumnus and president of Werling Associates Inc., will speak. The undergraduate commencement is at the same site at 2:30 p.m. Donna James, president of Nationwide Strategic Investments, will speak.

●University of Findlay, 2 p.m. today in the Malcolm Athletic Center. U.S. Rep. Mike Oxley (R., Findlay) will speak.
