Counselor will fill opening on Rossford school board

The Rossford Board of Education appointed a new board member yesterday who will serve until the end of the year.

Dawn R. Burks, 34, a guidance counselor at Perrysburg High School, was chosen yesterday by a 3-1 vote, with board member David Kleeberger voting for a different candidate.

Ms. Burks accepted last night and will be sworn in at the board's Aug. 15 meeting.

The board's vice president, Michael Spahr, resigned last month because he will be moving out of the school district. Ms. Burks will serve the rest of Mr. Spahr's term, which expires at the end of the year.

Board President Joseph Minarcin, Jr., said Ms. Burks was chosen because of her record of commitment to the board. She currently serves on the board's master plan and levy committees.

"Education is very important to me. When the levy didn't pass, that triggered even more interest," Ms. Burks said, referring to a 2-mill capital improvement levy that failed last November. She said her initial efforts will go toward "making the community more aware of what the schools offer" and what may be lost when levies fail.

Ms. Burks has a fourth-grade son attending Indian Hills Elementary School.
