Washington Local Schools select principal for Wernert Elementary

7/28/2005

Washington Local Schools' Wernert Elementary has a new principal.

The board unanimously approved hiring Vaughn Thacker on a two-year contract last night.

"Vaughn's a good match for what we're looking for," Superintendent Michael Carmean said.

Since 2001, Mr. Thacker has been a school improvement consultant with the Lucas County Educational Service Center, assigned to Washington Local's curriculum department.

He was previously a high school principal in the Marion Local School District, and a middle school principal and assistant elementary school principal in Wyoming.

"I hope I can help the children be the best they can be," he told the board.

Mr. Thacker, who has a doctorate in education administration and supervision from Bowling Green State University, graduated from Brigham Young University in 1976 and later returned there for a master's degree in education administration.

He will be paid $79,786 a year. He replaces Deborah Piotrowski, who resigned to become superintendent of the Millcreek-West Unity Local schools. She had been principal at Wernert since 2001.

Mr. Thacker is the second new principal hired this summer.

Scott Scharf's contract was approved June 30. He will replace Linda Culp at Shoreland Elementary School.

Ms. Culp transferred to Trilby Elementary School, where she will be principal. She replaces John Kosakowski, who retired.

In other business, the board unanimously awarded $243,409 in contracts for dividing a large room at the Career and Technology Center at Whitmer High School into smaller classrooms.

Brooks Contracting, of Perrysburg, was awarded $118,164 for general work; Dimech Services, of Toledo, was awarded $41,000 for mechanical work; and Brint Electric, of Toledo, was awarded $84,245 for electrical work.
