Interim superintendent job in Northwood whittled to 5

8/4/2005

The Northwood Local Board of Education plans to interview five candidates next week for the job of interim superintendent.

The board met in executive session last night to review resumes and applications to select the five candidates. All are retired superintendents from other districts, said Doug Garman, superintendent of the Wood County Educational Service Center.

The candidates are:

●Anthony Judson, former superintendent of Prairie Heights Community Schools in Indiana and Northwood superintendent in 1994.

●Robert Miller, a fiscal consultant with the Ohio Department of Education.

●Gary Jones, former superintendent of the Columbus Grove, Ohio, schools.

●Dick Gieringer, former superintendent for Stryker, Ohio, schools.

●John Fernbaugh, a former superintendent of McComb, Ohio, schools who most recently worked for the Ohio Association of School Business Officials.

Mr. Garman, who is advising the district in its search for an interim superintendent, said the board plans to interview each candidate for about 30 minutes on Wednesday.

The current Northwood superintendent, Ron Matter, is leaving the district after accepting a three-year contract at Penta Career Center in Perrysburg Township. He will be paid an annual salary of $98,149 to replace Pat Schultz, who is retiring. His first day on the job will be Sept. 1.

Mr. Garman suggested naming an interim superintendent because it was late in the hiring season and the applicant pool for permanent positions would have dried up.
