Northwood board picks interim superintendent

8/16/2005

Gary Jones, former superintendent of the Columbus Grove Local School District, has been named interim superintendent of the Northwood Local School District.

The board of education chose him because of the success of the district from which he retired and because of his personality, board President Scott Phelps said.

"His personality really impressed us," Mr. Phelps said. "He would be somebody who would come in and continue the positive momentum that we have going on in our district right now."

Mr. Jones has 20 years of experience as superintendent of the Columbus Grove school system, and spent 33 years in that district.

He will replace Ron Matter, who is leaving at the end of the month to become the assistant superintendent at Penta Career Center in Perrysburg Township. The board plans to officially hire Mr. Jones at its Aug. 24 regular board meeting, and he will start Sept. 1.

Mr. Jones will be paid a salary of $325 a day.

Mr. Phelps said the per diem salary was at the recommendation of Doug Garman, superintendent of the Wood County Educational Service Center, who advised the district in its search for an interim superintendent.
