Teacher of the Month: Sharon Hoppert

11/2/2005

Sharon Hoppert, an 18-year veteran of the Monroe County Hearing Impaired Program based at Ida, is truly a master teacher. She spends hours mentoring parents, student teachers, and fellow teachers in understanding the unique needs of hearing-impaired students.

She is actively involved in all aspects of her students' education. She has a special ability that allows her to recognize where students are and to guide them into independent young adults. She has taken hours of additional coursework to prepare her to teach many subjects outside her initial training, becoming involved in everything from computers to the Michigan School Health Model.

Ms. Hoppert puts in hours outside the classroom supporting her students in their extracurriculars. She has been the driving force behind reunions of the Hearing Impaired Program and the special senior dinners that hearing impaired graduates attend.

She is a key player in the North Central Accreditation process and is viewed as a leader by her peers. Her keen intelligence and sharp sense of humor make her a spark that keeps things moving at Ida.

"Sharon Hoppert is the teacher all of us aspire to be when we decide to go into teaching," said principal Cathleen Griffith. "Her ability to reach her students and bring out the best is amazing."

She has a master's degree from Eastern Michigan University.
