Liberty Center to seek tax issue

2/14/2006

LIBERTY CENTER, Ohio - A 0.75 percent income tax that the Liberty Center Board of Education will place on the May 2 ballot will be a continuing tax, rather than one with a set time limit, the board decided last night.

The vote last night was 3-1, with Larry Fry dissenting and Bruce Griteman absent.

Mr. Fry had joined a unanimous vote in favor of the tax proposal at a board meeting Jan. 23, but last night he opposed the open-ended aspect of the proposal, Jennifer Bonner, the district's treasurer, said.

As proposed, the tax is one-quarter percent higher than a measure district voters rejected in November.

According to the school board, the higher tax now is needed to recoup revenue lost because of the later start date.

If approved, the tax would generate about $700,000 annually for the school district, Ms. Bonner said.
