Tie sends Ottawa Hills team to state MATHCOUNTS event

2/14/2006

A fourth area junior high school will be sending a team to the state MATHCOUNTS competition next month because of a tie at the local level.

Ottawa Hills Junior High originally was not expected to go to the Columbus competition because it ranked fourth in the local competition held Feb. 4. However, because the team tied the third-place team from Sylvania's Timberstone Junior High School - a tie-breaking method was used - state officials decided to allow the four members of the team compete.

The Ottawa Hills Junior High team is made up of Jimmy Zimmerman, Nirbhay Jain, Chris Keener, and Matt Orgel.

Rules allow for three teams plus six individual students to advance to the state competition. Because two of the students on the Perrysburg team were going as individuals, two more spots were open, giving Collin Yu of Maumee Valley Country Day School and Robert Ellis of Timberstone Junior High the chance to compete as individuals. The state MATHCOUNTS competition will be March 11 at Columbus State Community College.
