Lake board could add student representative

3/17/2006

A Lake High student could be sitting at the table with the Lake Local Board of Education during meetings next school year.

Before the board voted to approve policy revisions to keep them up to date with state law, board member Ken Smith suggested implementing an optional clause in the policy regarding student involvement in decision-making that would put a student representative on the board.

While the policy states the representative would not be able to vote, Mr. Smith said the student would be able to comment, fostering student involvement and opinions.

In other action, the board voted on a tentative settlement with former maintenance, buildings, and grounds supervisor Bob Deal, who sued the board in April after it eliminated his job as a cost-cutting measure. If he approves the settlement, he will receive $16,750 cash, $12,349 in accumulated sick leave when he retires, and $1,135 for six days of work, giving him 25 years of service.
