Katie Hilbert, a senior magazine journalism major at Kent State University, has been named the recipient of the Marge McNab Block Award.

The award - $1,000 from The Blade - is presented yearly to Kent's graduating senior woman in news with the highest grade-point average.

Ms. Hilbert of Akron has written for the Daily Kent Stater, of which she was features editor, and Burr magazine, of which she was editor. She has written for Fusion magazine.

She was a 2005 intern at Family Circle Magazine in New York City, part of an American Society of Magazine Editors internship program. She received the Akron Press Club's John S. Knight Scholarship.

After she graduates next month, she hopes to find a job writing and editing at a magazine or writing for a newspaper features department.

The Marge McNab Block Award is named for the late Mrs. Block, a Kent State graduate who was a reporter and director of features and women's news at The Blade. Her husband was Paul Block, Jr., publisher of The Blade from 1942 until his death in 1987.
