4/27/2006

Nine students from area schools will be recognized tomorrow for their winning essays in the Caty Armstrong Memorial Law Day contest sponsored by the Toledo Bar Association and The Blade.

The awards will be presented at the annual Law Day luncheon at the Wyndham Hotel in downtown Toledo, which begins at noon.

U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) will be the featured speaker.

The first-place winners are Benjamin Jones, Maumee High School, Division I (grades 11 and 12); Tess Waggoner, Maumee High School, Division II (grades 9 and 10), and Lauren Coombs, West Side Montessori Center, Division III (grades 7 and 8).

The topic of the annual essay contest was Balance of Powers.

The contest was named after Caty Armstrong, a resident of Sylvania Township and a student at Sylvania Southview High School. The 1993 third-place finisher in Division II died that year in a car accident.
