Findlay school district lays off 9 teachers

4/28/2006

FINDLAY - As part of a plan to avoid a projected operating deficit of $500,000, the Findlay city school board laid off nine classroom teachers for the 2006-07 school year Wednesday night.

The teachers' contracts were nonrenewed along with those of five long-term substitute teachers.

Superintendent Dean Wittwer said that while it was painful to have to lay off anyone, the board was able to minimize the cuts through attrition, including a number of retirements. In total, about 50 full and part-time positions have been eliminated, including about 30 teaching and administrative posts.
