Owens asking its grads to donate caps, gowns

5/9/2006

The more than 700 students graduating from Owens Community College this year are being asked to donate their caps and gowns to needy future graduates, the school announced yesterday.

The traditional commencement garb would be offered at no charge, though recipients would have to participate for a few hours with Owens-sponsored student organizations.

Costing about $26 each, the caps and gowns are seldom worn after graduation, said John Byers, coordinator of student activities at Owens.

Student government will set up collection areas in the hallway adjacent to the Student Health and Activities Center of the Toledo-area campus. New graduates can donate their caps and gowns immediately after the 7 p.m. Thursday ceremony.
