Eugene Sanders: TPS superintendent has been offered job in Cleveland.

The Toledo Board of Education voted this morning to allow Superintendent Eugene Sanders to resign effective at the end of today instead of Aug. 31 and to hire the district s chief of staff, John Foley, as his interim replacement.

Board President Darlene Fisher and member Robert Torres voted against the resolution to accelerate the date of Mr. Sanders resignation and appoint him as a consultant to the interim superintendent.

Last week, Ms. Fisher joined a unanimous vote to negotiate with Mr. Sanders for terms under which he would resign today. She later said the only severance Mr. Sanders should receive is his accumulated, unused vacation time.

In December, Mr. Sanders submitted his resignation, effective Aug. 31, and has since been offered the chief executive officer job for the Cleveland public schools.

Under the agreement passed yesterday, Mr. Sanders will be paid $16,820 to act as consultant until June 30 and $25,520 because he will forego compensation he would have received until Aug. 31.

Mr. Sanders will also be paid $47,003 for 56 unused vacation days.

Ms. Fisher also voted against the resolution to appoint Mr. Foley as the interim superintendent.

She said her no vote was not a lack of support for Mr. Foley, who will be paid a $130,000 annual base salary.
