Owens CC asked to visit Army base

The U.S. Army is asking Owens Community College to train nurses to be all that they can be, choosing to have the school participate in a two-day visit to Fort Gordon in Georgia this month.

"The U.S. Army is not immune to the nursing shortage and is constantly seeking nurses to provide world-class health care for soldiers," said Pearl Manion, a clinical teaching associate in Owens' nursing program who will represent the school at Fort Gordon.

Owens is one of 17 colleges invited to the military base, which will hold a mock field exercise meant to simulate injuries and casualties that occur on the battlefield. The group of college officials also will learn about nursing opportunities in the Army.

With Terra Community College in Fremont planning to have its own nursing program this August, the Owens' board of trustees has sought to protect their nursing students' access to clinical training sites.
