Reading board, teachers to meet with mediator

11/1/2006

READING, Mich. A teachers union and the Reading Board of Education are expected to meet with a mediator tonight in an attempt to settle a contract dispute that has festered since June 30, when the old contract expired.

The teachers filed an unfair labor practice against the district after the board declared an impasse.

George Johnson, a Lansing attorney the board hired, said declaring the impasse was not illegal.

The board is asking teachers to accept a high-deductible on their health insurance, which includes a health-savings account.
