Oregon says no to school uniform plan

12/7/2006

Students attending the Oregon City School District will not be required to wear uniforms - at least for now.

The school board decided unanimously at last night's meeting to side with its uniform committee, which recommended that a stricter and more-enforced dress code was the way to go.

But if problems persist with students regularly breaking the dress code in the future, the topic may once again be up for debate, board member Jeff Ziviski said.

Mr. Ziviski is chairman of the uniform committee that has been meeting regularly for the last few months to debate the issue. The committee is made up of board members, school building principals, teachers, and parents.

The committee will remain intact in the future, possibly broken up into smaller focus groups, to come up with language that will update the district's current dress code and identify the parties in charge of enforcing it.

Board members are hoping the new language will be approved and in place by the 2007-08 school year.
