Two Michigan colleges have received grants from the U.S. Department of Education to fund a program that helps at-risk youths complete high school and pursue a college education.
Siena Heights University, Adrian, will receive $339,722; Monroe County Community College, Monroe, will get $250,000.
The Upward Bound program serves students from low-income families and students from families in which neither parent has a bachelor s degree.
The competitive grant provides for instruction in math, laboratory sciences, composition, literature, and foreign languages. It also supports tutoring, counseling, mentoring, cultural enrichment, and work-study programs.
Siena Heights has had the Upward Bound program since 1973; this is the first time Monroe County Community College has received the grant.
